Upsizing the family car? Our 6 top tips for finding the perfect vehicle for your family

February 2025

Baby on the way? Surprise twins? A dog to consider as well? It’s exciting to see your family grow, but it might mean that you need a bigger car. There are some fantastic family-friendly vehicles on the market - new or used, but the decision to replace your car can feel overwhelming. From safety features to running costs and finding the perfect fit for the pram, there's a lot to consider.

Not to worry - we’ve gathered some handy tips from the experts at AMI MotorHub on how to choose the best car for your whānau.

Why choosing the right family car matters

Investing in a new family car is more than just getting an upgrade - it's about keeping your precious cargo safe and comfortable. Whether it's the first baby seat or the fifth backpack, having a reliable family car makes life run much more smoothly.

Considering your current and future needs is key. If you make a good choice now you won’t have the hassle of having to change your vehicle every few years. The best family cars tick the boxes for size, reliability, safety credentials and price.

Things to consider when buying a family car

1. Budget and costs

Growing a family comes with many new expenses, so finding a family car that fits within your budget is crucial. As well as the upfront cost you'll need to think about ongoing expenses like fuel/charging, maintenance, and insurance.

Tips for managing costs:

  • Finance wisely: If you’re financing your purchase, use an online loan calculator to check the repayments fit within your budget.
  • Consider pre-loved gems: Second-hand cars can be just as reliable as new cars but come at a fraction of the cost. Look for vehicles that have been well looked after and regularly serviced.
  • Research insurance options: Insurance costs vary depending on the vehicle and cover so it's important to weigh these up and to compare different quotes too. AMI is on your side with different cover options to give you the protection you need.

2. Safety features

Keeping your kids safe is non-negotiable, which is why safety features should be at the top of your checklist. Modern family cars come equipped with technology designed to help protect your loved ones during every trip. Even if you're not in the market for a brand-new vehicle, you want to find the safest family car you can. Safety ratings can help guide your decision-making. You can learn more about safety ratings on the NZTA website, then use the Rightcar.govt.nz and ANCAP websites to access up-to-date safety information for vehicles you are considering.

Must-have safety features:

  • Rear-seat ISOFIX anchorage points: These ensure that child car seats are securely fitted.
  • ABS and airbags: Anti-lock braking systems and multiple airbags significantly reduce the risk of serious injuries in accidents.
  • Reversing cameras and parking sensors: These are a game-changer for stress-free parking, especially in tight spaces.
  • Lane departure warnings and autonomous emergency braking: These add an extra layer of protection on long drives.

According to NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi, children under 7 must be secured in an approved child restraint when travelling in a vehicle. Choosing a car with ISOFIX connectors helps parents stay compliant while keeping their children as safe as possible. Check out our car seat safety tips if you'd like to learn more.

3. Size and space requirements

Can you make do with a small car with enough room for just one baby capsule and a stroller, or are you ferrying three children and their sports gear around every weekend? Make sure your new car has enough seats and storage space for a growing family.

Things to consider:

  • Boot space: Check the boot size and how well it accommodates strollers, groceries, and luggage for family trips.
  • Cabin space: Assess how spacious and comfortable the interior is, for front and rear passengers - this is important if car seats are to be used in your vehicle.
  • Expandable seating: If your whānau is still growing, a car with a flexible third row might be ideal.
  • Ease of access: Sliding doors on people movers, for example, can make wrangling children in crowded car parks a bit easier.

Tip: Bring your baby seat and stroller when inspecting potential cars to see how comfortably they fit.

4. Choosing the right vehicle model

Different families have different needs, which is why knowing the pros and cons of each vehicle type is important.

Popular family cars options:

  • SUVs: Perfect if you're after a spacious interior, a big boot and higher driving positions. Most SUVs offer enough room for car seats, groceries, and even a stroller or two while still fitting into standard parking spaces. They're great if you have an active whānau or travel long distances. Many larger SUVs offer 7-seat options which can be invaluable. Keep in mind the potentially higher fuel costs associated with larger vehicles. More efficient EV and hybrid options are increasingly available in New Zealand.
  • People movers/Minivans/MPVs: These are a top choice for larger families thanks to roomy designs, typically 7-8 seats across three rows and practical sliding doors. They're great for getting around town and can be fun for heading off on adventures. EV options are somewhat limited but are common in overseas markets, so expect more choice in the future.
  • Crossovers: For the styling of a regular car but with increased ride height, ground clearance and 4WD options with better fuel efficiency than an SUV, crossovers are a good choice. With more space than some other family cars, you'll have room for your usual passengers and their friends. Play dates will be a breeze.
  • Station wagons: With a body shape that has served as the trusty Kiwi family car across generations, station wagons blend car-like handling with extra space, and offer a practical alternative to SUVs. With generous boot capacity and a lower centre of gravity, they provide smooth driving, ample room for family gear and can be more fuel efficient than larger SUVs.
  • Sedans: Ideal for smaller whānau, sedans are affordable, easy to drive, and fuel-efficient. You'll also find there are plenty of options to choose from. However, their limited storage space could become an issue as your family grows.
  • Hatchbacks: Compact, affordable, fuel-efficient, easy to manoeuvre and park in tight city spaces, hatchbacks can be a low-cost option for small families.

5. Long-term value

Think about how long you'll be keeping the car and whether it will still suit your family's needs. Consider factors like depreciation and resale value, durability, and adaptability to ensure your investment provides value for years to come.

Questions to ask yourself:

  • Will this car still suit our family when the kids hit their teenage years?
  • Are parts readily available if it needs repairs down the track?

6. Efficiency and environment

If you're hoping to save money, consider a hybrid or battery electric vehicles (BEVs) as these can reduce running costs significantly. To lower your family's carbon footprint, electric cars are also becoming more family-friendly in terms of size, functionality, with new and second-hand options becoming more affordable in NZ.

Finding the balance that's right for your whānau

When purchasing a family vehicle, there's no one-size-fits-all approach - it truly comes down to what works best for your family's needs. By balancing factors like budget, safety, and space, you're much more likely to make a choice you'll be happy with for years to come.
