Am I covered for temporary accommodation costs if an authority requires me to evacuate my home?

Evacuating your home in an emergency is stressful, and temporary accommodation during this time can be costly. All AMI house and contents policies provide temporary accommodation cover. So, if you are required to evacuate your home, we’ll help cover the cost of your temporary accommodation while it is unsafe for you and your family to be in your home, up to the limits outlined in your policy:

  1. if you’re required to evacuate your house by a local authority or government agency (like Civil Defence, NZ Police or Fire and Emergency NZ)
  2. because your property is at risk of damage, from an event that would be covered under your policy, and
  3. where you have a Temporary Accommodation benefit.

In these situations, cover will apply, subject to terms and conditions, regardless of whether your home is damaged or not ‐ you'll just need to pay your excess. If your home or belongings are damaged after you’ve been evacuated, you won’t need to pay another excess. If, during the evacuation, you need to put your domestic pets into boarding, the Temporary Accommodation benefit can also be used to cover these costs.

Please contact us to make your claim and we’ll talk you through your eligibility and the level of cover available to you. This information is only intended as a guide. Policy limits and exclusions apply. Please refer to the policy wording for full terms and conditions or contact us to discuss.
