Little Sprouts Community Grants

Meet Little Sprouts – one of our Neighbourly Community Grants winners for 2018.

Established in 2009, their mission is to give all babies the very best start in life, and to date that’s certainly something they’ve done – growing into the wonderful charity the are now, providing life-changing boxes of baby, health and safety supplies for families in need.

Run solely by volunteers from hubs in Wellington, Christchurch and Auckland, they work with the Neonatal Trust, the Women's Refuge, Red Cross Refugee Services, Barnardos, Birthright, Family Start programs (who support high need families), teen parent programs, the Mary Potter Hospice, hospital social workers and more to provide packs filled with close to 200 items a baby needs in the first year of life.

Sarah Yuile, Branch Manager at Little Sprouts Kapiti, says “We have had nine packs go out since April, each pack costs us $120 as we include brand new items such as a Merino Kids sleeping bag and health and safety items, such as a thermometer and smoke alarm. We ensure our packs include everything a family will need to provide a safe and comfortable first year of life for their little one.

Since getting the grant we have provided packs to charities supporting immigrant families, women escaping domestic violence, young parents and families who are struggling financially to provide for their babies.

We continue to receive a steady number of requests from families in need, it's great that we are able to continue to offer this service thanks to the likes of this grant.”

Little Sprouts works with over 30 Charity Partners and the likes of ACC, Safe Kids, and the NZ Fire Service. Items in the packs are donated and obtained from a range of people and organisations – including special toys, blankets and clothing made especially by people who support Little Sprouts.

Extras can also be included on a case by case basis, such as safe sleeping spaces, strollers, baths, and high chairs.

Little Sprouts now give away over $1 million of baby gear away each year – ensuring the next generation of Kiwi kids have the best start in life they can get.

Tara Bowker, Marketing Specialist for AMI, says “Little Sprouts were a natural choice for our AMI Community Grants Finalists. AMI’s purpose is to make the world that little bit safer, and we were looking to support projects and organisations which aligned with this purpose. Little Sprouts was the perfect fit!”
