Happy to be in Palmerston North
Ah, Palmy. It’s easy to think that Palmerston North is just another student-centered place, but we discover in today’s blog that that’s not the case. Dani from Palmy sets the record straight, offers some cool netball tips, and talks to us about why she loves competitive sport.
Hi Danii! Can you tell us more about yourself and your role in AMI?
I’m 23 years old and have lived in Palmy for the last 2 years. I’m originally from Wellington and moved up here for my partner who is in the Army. We have a 2-year-old fur baby daughter named Nala who is the apple of our eyes.
I enjoy hanging with family and friends, playing most sports, and food. But there’s nothing that makes me happier than taking Nala for walks and watching her play with other dogs.
I’ve only recently joined AMI about 4 months ago. I’m really enjoying the role of helping others in difficult times when it comes to claims time and I truly love our purpose of making the world a safer place. There’s so much to learn but having a supportive cool team with years of experience under their belt really makes everything a lot easier.
Congrats on the recent netball win! How long have you been playing netball? What do you like about it?
I’ve been playing netball ever since I was 10 years old. I play in the midcourt so it’s my job to get the ball into the shooters. There’s so much I love about the sport – I love running around and getting the ball into the shooters, watching them shoot the ball into the hoop knowing that I helped get that to them. I really enjoy being a part of a team and really love all the friendships I’ve made over the years. And like anyone, I love healthy competition and love to win.
What do you like about living in Palmerston North?
I like that Palmy is quite quaint and everything is pretty much walking distance. It really makes travelling to work a breeze! Also being central in New Zealand makes travelling around the country easier. Knowing it’s only a 2-hour drive either way if you wanted to go to the friendly capital Wellington or the beautiful Hawkes Bay and just being able to fly directly around NZ straight out of Palmy city.
What’s the one Palmy myth you’d like to debunk?
Hmm, the one myth I’d like to debunk Palmy is that it’s not just a student city. I actually think it’s perfect for all ages – great to start a family in and nice and quiet if you’re looking to retire!
Any netball tips?
Yes! My top netball tips would definitely be:
- Pass and drive really strong – even if you don’t get the pass you’re still drawing players start your pre movements early to be an option for the next pass
- If you’re a shooter really hold strong
- If you’re a defender box out
