Electric Car insurance FAQs:

Does AMI insure electric (EV), hybrid and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) vehicles?

Yes, we do. We offer cover via our car insurance policies on all the electric, hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicle models available in the New Zealand market (e.g. Toyota Prius, Nissan Leaf, Hyundai IONIQ, and Mitsubishi Outlander.)

Does cover differ between EV or petrol-powered cars?

No, generally there is no difference in cover for EVs and petrol cars. With AMI Comprehensive Car Insurance, you get the same benefits and your EV, Hybrid or PHEV is covered for accidental loss or damage, fire, theft, liability, and any other optional extras we offer.

Are EVs, hybrids and PHEVs covered for AMI's Breakdown Service?

Yes. If you've taken out AMI Comprehensive Car Insurance and added the optional AMI Breakdown Service to your policy, our Breakdown Service team can assist with EV, Hybrid and PHEV breakdowns.

What happens if I lose my charger?

The charger/charging cable that comes with your car is considered a part of the vehicle and is covered under our Comprehensive Car Insurance. So, if you lose or damage it and you have Comprehensive cover, you'll be able to make a claim to get a replacement.

Are charging stations covered by my car insurance?

If you choose to install a fixed charging station (power bank) in your home, it wouldn't be covered under your car insurance. However, if it's permanently wired in by an electrician, it would be covered under an AMI House Insurance policy.

If I've bought an EV using the Clean Car Discount, what should my sum insured be?

It's important you cover your EV car for the original purchase price of the vehicle - before the rebate is applied. This is because your sum insured is the most we'll pay for a total loss claim and the current Clean Car Discount may no longer available should your car become a total loss.*

*The government's Clean Car Discount offer currently expires on 31st March 2022.

Does AMI comprehensive car insurance cover my EV battery?

If your car is involved in an accident and the battery is damaged then yes, it's covered. However, if the battery has some kind of electrical or electronic malfunction, failure or damage then that won't be covered unless that damage results from:

  • Fire
  • Collision
  • Overturning
  • Immersion in water
  • Natural disaster
  • Flood
  • Malicious damage
  • Theft
  • Illegal conversion

Does AMI cover electric motorcycles?

Yes, we do. AMI treats electric motorcycles the same as equivalent petrol-powered motorbikes and these would be covered under our Motorcycle policy. Your electric motorcycle would be covered under an AMI motorcycle policy for accidental loss or damage, fire, theft, liability, and any other optional extras we offer.
