Help is at hand: how Jo's caring nature shines through

With 15 years' experience working in claims for AMI, Jo uses her natural generosity and compassion to help others.

Jo is a Hamilton-based mother of three and grandmother of three. She and her husband have two dogs who she says are exact opposites.

"I've got a Hungarian Vizsla who's absolutely crazy and a Shitzu who thinks she's bulletproof and six feet tall," she laughs.

One of her children is based in Hamilton with her granddaughters, one in Papamoa and one is based overseas. She managed to get across to Darwin recently to see her daughter and her newborn grandson.

"I was lucky enough to get out while the borders were open," she says. "He's just six or seven months old."

15 years of helping people

Jo has been with AMI for 15 years, where she helps customers process their insurance claims and talks them through a difficult time or situation.

"I lodge the claim for the customer and try to put them at ease before their claim goes onto a case manager," she explains.

She enjoys her job for one simple reason:

"I love to help people as best I can and put their minds at ease. You want to make it as pleasant, easy-going and stress-free as possible."

Huge claims and last minute saves

Jo's been in the business for a long time and lodged thousands of claims, but the ones that stand out for her are the claims where she was able to make someone's life a little easier. One example was a lady in the South Island who lost her home in a fire.

It was late on Thursday afternoon and Jo had to help find the lady accommodation to make sure she had a roof over her head.

"I had to set all that up for her," she says. "And that was quite hard to deal with from the start because she was more or less left with nothing but the clothes on her back."

She says: "I was ringing around motels to see if they had anything. I was lucky enough to get the second one I rang. They took her for a week."

Jo adds that, in a nutshell, that's what her job's all about - helping people.

"It's about doing the best that you can for the customer. We will do the best for you and we want to help you as much as we can and be there and support you."
