Hearing impaired customers

Hearing impaired customers can get Breakdown Service via text message. Email your full name, date of birth, address, and car registration number for more information.

AMI Breakdown service covers you for:

  • Anyone who’s driving your car – we can rescue anyone driving your car who needs help getting back on the road
  • 24/7 assistance - when you need assistance we are there to help day or night
  • Changing tyres - when you need assistance with getting a flat tyre changed
  • Jump starts - when you have a flat battery. If required, a new battery can also be delivered and fitted at your own expense.
  • Emergency fuel - if you run out of fuel, up to 5 litres of fuel (petrol or diesel) will be delivered to you. Please note that the cost of fuel is your responsibility.
  • Towing - if your vehicle requires towing due to a breakdown, we will send someone to tow your vehicle to the nearest repairer or place of safety
  • Keys lost or locked in vehicle - when you need to gain access to your vehicle but you are locked out or have lost your keys. Please note that costs for key cutting, replacement keys, and locks are your responsibility.
  • Mechanical advice - expert mechanical and technical advice
  • Emergency taxi or rental vehicle - a taxi or rental vehicle can be arranged for you. Please note that all costs are your responsibility.

Optional add-on:

Nominated Person Cover

For a little extra you can purchase Nominated Person cover for up to two people per vehicle. The level of cover provided for a Nominated Person is the same as the level of cover you have selected for AMI Breakdown service on your vehicle.

The nominated person:

  • Will have access to AMI Breakdown service no matter whose car they are driving or travelling in.
  • Doesn't even need to be insured with AMI
  • Must reside at the same address as the policyholder

Your choice, two levels of cover:

Standard ($32)

Our standard cover is a great option if you want basic breakdown service without the bells and whistles:

  • 3 call outs per year
  • Cover for service costs*
    *up to a limit of $60 per call out

Premier ($76)

Our Premier cover offers our highest level of cover, providing extra reassurance in the event of a breakdown:

  • 5 call outs per year
  • Extra cover for service costs*
    *up to a limit of $150 per call out
  • Cover for towed vehicles such as your caravan, boat, or trailer

Tailor your Standard cover with optional extras:

  • Extra call outs – up to a maximum of 5 per year (extra $18 per year)
  • Extra cover for service costs – up to a limit of $150 per call out (extra $18 per year)
  • Cover for towed vehicles – such as your caravan, boat or trailer (extra $32 a year)
  • Nominated person cover – this covers another person in any car, whether they’re a passenger or driver for up to 2 people (extra $32 per person)

Or choose our Premier cover

Get 12 months of cover for just $76. This gives you Standard cover plus higher limits of cover. You'll get 5 call outs, up to a limit of $150 per call out, and it includes cover for towed vehicles.

AMI Breakdown service does not apply to:

  • Vehicles weighing over three tonnes
  • Unroadworthy vehicles
  • Vehicles requiring special recovery such as the use of four wheel drive recovery vehicles
  • Vehicles participating in rallies or races
  • Vehicles not on public roads where permission for access has not yet been received
  • Vehicles that have been left unattended
  • Vehicles in an accident
  • Vehicles not in New Zealand

Important details

  • AMI Breakdown service is a vehicle policy option. You cannot purchase AMI Breakdown service without first having a qualifying AMI vehicle insurance policy
  • Service cost limits apply to each call out. Some extra services are at your own cost. Examples: a new battery, fuel, replacement keys and locks

If you don’t want to continue your current AMI breakdown cover, you can opt out. If you opt out, breakdown cover will be removed from your motor policy, and you won’t be charged for the service.
