In 2014 Sergeant Dan Harker attended a shocking triple fatality accident just out of Rakaia. A Dutch tourist had failed to stop at an intersection in the Selwyn District, and in the resulting crash 12 year old Abi Hone, her best friend Ella and Ella’s Mum Sally were all killed. During his 31 year career as a policeman, Dan attended more than 100 vehicle-related fatalities like this, and In March 2015 AMI was proud to help Sergeant Dan in his bid to make rural intersections safer.
Dan developed a low-cost warning sign which will give drivers advanced warning of upcoming intersections on our extensive rural road network. Using solar-powered flashing LED lights and vehicle detection sensors, this innovative sign comes at a cost so AMI stepped in to help him fund his trial. Thanks to Dan these advanced warning signs have the potential to significantly reduce the number and severity of crashes at these rural intersections, and we look forward to the outcome of the trial in 2017.
