Canterbury earthquake information

December 23 earthquake update

If you have new or additional damage to your House or Contents as a result of recent earthquake events, in the first instance lodge your claim with EQC on 0800 DAMAGE. EQC notes that home owners with private insurance have three months to lodge a claim for damage from the date of the earthquake.

If you have damage to out of scope parts of your property not covered by EQC but covered under your AMI policy (such as fences, paths, driveways), please lodge your claim with AMI.

Govt will oversee earthquake claims resolution through separate company

On December 16, 2011, the Board of AMI Insurance announced

  • It had accepted a conditional offer from IAG to purchase AMI
  • AMI’s existing dedicated earthquake recovery team would be separated from AMI to form the core of a Government-owned earthquake resolution company. This group will have significant capital available including reinsurance money to ensure all AMI earthquake claims continue to be met in line with the terms of the customer’s insurance policies.

In the meantime it’s business as usual, and AMI customers will not notice any difference in their normal day to day dealings with AMI or in the progression of their earthquake claims. Customers will progressively begin to receive further information on the sale and separation.
